Quotable: Excess has impaired perspective in America

Quotable: "Excess has impaired perspective in America..." - Jen Hatmaker

“Excess has impaired perspective in America; we are the richest people on Earth, praying to get richer. We’re tangled in unmanageable debt while feeding the machine, because we feel entitled to more.” – Jen Hatmaker, 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

You guys know all about Jen Hatmaker’s book in which she cut back in seven areas of her life over the course of seven months in order to focus more on Christ and less on stuff. I picked it up for beach reading, and ended up cracking it open before we even made it to the shore. The nugget above comes from page 3. I’m barely into this thing and it’s already so.good.  I can’t wait to see what lies ahead!

Have you read the book? What did you think?

    1. Yes! It reminded me of a message I heard about how Paul’s prayers centered almost exclusively on knowing Christ more, rather than the health and wealth prayers of our modern culture (I pray for peoples’ health all the time and obviously Jesus modeled praying for our daily bread so I’m not trying to discount anyone’s prayers for health and provision) but I loved how direct and true this quote is!

    1. The book is so good so far! I’m about half way through, definitely plan to write more about it as I keep reading. Hope your week is off to a great start!

  1. I have been looking for a book like this. I was saying to myself the other day as I had bought yet ANOTHER purse I did not need, why did I buy this? Talk about not putting my money to good use. I feel like this world is all about STUFF that we forget about how much we don’t need it! Jesus provides for us in so many ways, why do we feel the need to be materialistic? This book is now on my summer reading list- I need to cut back and really think about what is important vs. stuff. Keep the book suggestions coming! I started reading The Blessed Life and am enjoying it!

    1. It’s so true!! I’m glad you’re liking The Blessed Life!
7 is soooo good so far! It’s very different from Robert Morris’s book, but I think you’d like it. I had to take a break for a couple days because I was reading it so quickly and I wanted to make it last longer (weird, I know haha). I definitely recommend it! It’s funny and conversational but still packs a punch with a great message.
